Anxiety Recovery is a Lifestyle Change

In the world of anxiety recovery, many people are unaware of the dramatic extent to which changes must be made in order to live lives not inhibited by anxiety. Many salespeople sell products or anxiety recovery systems that promise you “guaranteed results” in a short period of time, or your money will be refunded. Anything or anyone that offers “guaranteed results” or results within an extremely short period of time(less than a month or so) is full of marketing or sales hype. “Hype” is just another term for lying. Products promising short-term results are hyped so that they will sell, but will they actually help? In most cases, they will not. Most products are marketed with the intention of making money, and not with the intention of helping people; of course, some products are actually effective, but these products are the exception rather than the rule.

One important point to remember about anxiety recovery is that it is not a simple product or system that is going to make people feel better. If a person follows one magical or secret technique, it will probably help, but only for a little bit and only for a little while. After all, it is important to remember that somehow in the past before anxiety products were even sold, people were able to heal from an anxiety disorder! Gandhi, for example, was very anxious as a child, teenager, and young adult, and he was an unsuccessful lawyer because of his anxiety until his early thirties, when finally acts of discrimination triggered his social movement to end civil right discrimination towards Indians in South Africa and free India from British rule. Somehow, without the help of a “miracle anxiety product,” Gandhi was able to move past his social anxiety and become one of the most notable leaders in modern history.

While anxiety products, for the most part, are a short-term solution to a long-term problem, they are not without their merit. A useful way to view anxiety products is that they are providing information and techniques that one might not know or might not be able to discover on his or her own. Many different techniques and methods exist for treating anxiety, and every person can figure out on his or her own how to recover from anxiety, however, this can take extensive time and research to accomplish. Anxiety products do have good information in place, however, it is important to keep in mind that no one product will solve everyone’s problems. Anxiety works differently in different people, and therefore, while one product may be incredibly effective for one person, the same product may have little or no effect in another person. The negative part about anxiety products is that they are pitched as though they work for everyone, and it can cost hundreds and thousands of dollars before a person finds the right product for him or her self.

For these reasons, it is important to keep in mind that truly effective anxiety recovery occurs as a complete lifestyle overhaul, not as a result of a product or system that hones in on a few basic techniques or one particular aspect of anxiety. Anxiety is a condition that affects all parts of a person’s life, not just certain parts.

What is meant by a complete lifestyle overhaul? A lifestyle overhaul means that a person analyzes each and every one of his or her thoughts and actions and attempts to determine how anxiety affects or is affected by each of these thoughts or actions. Then, the individual must build his or her entire life around anxiety recovery. And, to add another wrinkle, as a person grows, the way in which anxiety affects him or her changes as a result of his or her growth. Perhaps anxiety no longer affects a person in certain ways, but perhaps now it affects that same person where it did not affect them before. That is why anxiety recovery is a complete lifestyle overhaul. Products respond to people who are static and entrenched in a certain state and aim to help that person to move to a presumably better state of living; however, what products are dynamic and able to meet people where they are at and also help them as they develop as people?

That is why anxiety recovery must be a lifestyle change. People must be taught to be conscious of how anxiety is affecting them in its many different facets so that they are ready to change and adapt in response. A person who builds his or her entire lifestyle around anxiety recovery is aware that certain foods are known to increase one’s anxiety (see Tips for an Anxiety-Friendly Diet), that exercise reduces anxiety (see Anxiety and Exercise), that counseling is very helpful (see ASN’s Why Counseling and The Benefits of Counseling), that supportive relationships are needed (see ASN’s Supportive Friends), and finally that recovery is not always immediate and often takes some time (see ASN’s Patience, Recovery Takes Time).

This is just a brief list of the very many tools that exist in order to help people recover from anxiety, but all are effective to some degree, and as noted before, all are effective to different degrees based on the different people they serve. The interesting thing is that people are willing to spend hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars for this type of information or worse yet for information that is not even effective, when it’s all just sitting right here for free!

What it is important for people to do is to begin trying things and to determine how effective each tool might be for them. And, it is also important to remember to give each technique some time before crossing it off the list. People who engage in certain anxiety recovery techniques but then allow anxiety to happen in over parts of their lives are not engaging in anxiety recovery at all; that is why anxiety products fail.

In sum, it is clear that in order for a person to effectively address an anxiety disorder, he or she must analyze each and every thought and action that he or she takes during the day and make sure that all thoughts and actions are geared towards anxiety recovery, from the time he or she wakes up to the time he or she goes to bed. While success may not be immediate as a person learns which techniques work for him or her, success will happen to all those who are willing to work for it. I wish peace and good fortune to everyone who ventures on the journey of anxiety recovery!
